Comments: Outstanding Site. "Thanks for the memories" I have updates on others that are on your roster and some that have not been put on your roster. Let me know if you ever need any pieces of history. I still have copies of the ship's newspaper during the 1979 WesPac Deployment. Keep up the good work. Very Respectfully, "Ski"

Comments: Hello gentlemen, my father, Peter Stakich jr. Was on the Queenfish as a young boy i spent hrs. Looking through his sea trunk at the pictures of him as a young man with a beard with his shipmates. He only talked the war a couple of times. He told me the time of pulling men out a sea on fire with burning fuel. Of hrs spent taping out Morse trying to get news of his little brother Dan Stakich, who wanted to be like Petie, who was lost on the Trigger. Of being at the A-bomb tests at Bikini (he has a wire recording of it in a tin can). I never understood his bitterness at captains risking there crews to sink a ship for there files in the last days a war already won. I was always impressed with his loyalty to the old man. I was equally impressed with his flattened finger smashed by a torpedo. Mostly though he would just play songs like "Anchors away" on his harmonica as he rolled a cigarette in his mouth and drank boiler makers. he retired from NYC railroad out of Clev, Ohio. Moved to long beach and died in his sleep last year in Bakersfield, CA. I have that same crew picture on the beach and another in the same location, but he's sitting on a picnic bench, and another of him chasing a girl down the beach, and she isn't in uniform. Finding that crew picture just having it pop out like a ghost triggered a lot of cherished memories with my father and I thank you very much for remaining loyal all these years to your shipmates. The Stakich's

Comments: My Dad and I were wondering how nuclear subs were powered. Your website help me out. My Dad is an old Navy man, actually he entered the Coast Guard at the end of World War II, 1945, which was under the Department of the Navy at the time. He was a fireman aboard the USS Greenboro. He loved serving his time and stills enjoys reading about World War II. I served six years in the Air Force during the Vietnam War and six years in the Naval Reserves in the late 80s and early 90s. Your website help us out alot. I used to work in a steam electric power station and I understand how electricity is made from steam power. I was saying to my Dad that nuclear energy could only be used to be making steam which did not made sense to neither of us. We had a difficult time understanding how steam could be made underwater in an area so small. The boilers my Dad maintain in the Navy were three stories high. The boilers that I have been familiar with were thirteen stories high. It will be interesting to find more out about submarine power. Thanks again for providing some answers.

Comments: I was interested in the story about the sailor lost aboard the Scorpion. When the Scorpion went down, I was on patrol aboard the USS Von Steuben SSBN-632 (Blue), having just left Rota, Spain. The first reports on the news said a nuclear submarine out of Rota was missing in the Atlantic. Those reports made for some pretty anxious moments for my wife and family as they knew I was on "a nuclear submarine out of Rota." They were all relieved when they learned it wasn't the Von Steuben that was lost. Later I learned that while leaving Rota, the Scorpion had run interference against the Soviet trawlers for our sister ship the John C. Calhoun SSBN 630. We had that same problem leaving Rota a few days ahead of the Calhoun. Anyway, I will always remember the brave men of the Scorpion.

Comments: Just wanted you all to know that my daddy, Joseph L. D'Agostino Sr., is alive and well in Huntsville, Alabama. He served aboard the SS393 from '43-'45. He boarded the Queenfish in Guam after it arrived from New Hamshire. If I am not mistaken, he worked with radios and communications. We still have great photos of him in uniform--what a cutie-pie! He has not attended any of the reunions; I think just because he is stubborn. You know how that goes. He is doing well. Downright ornery most of the time. Haha He hailed from Memphis, Tennessee where he married this gorgeous German creature, my mother, and they gave rise to two boys and then me. He retired from Tennesee Valley Authority about 5 years ago and has been systematically fixing watches and driving my mother crazy ever since. He is a watchmaker--a tradition that is about lost. He went back to it after retirement and found a tremendous need for a watchmaker in this area. It seems some folks just cannot be trusted with old timepieces and precious memories, but my daddy does an excellent job...and he likes it...and he has stopped rearranging my mother's kitchen. I am truly sorry I found this website so late, or perhaps I could have persuaded him to attend this current reunion. If anyone would like to contact him, get me at my email rmwink@netscape.net, and I will let him know. I am getting the computer set up at their house soon, so he too will be emailable. Hope to hear from someone soon. Rose-Marie D'Agostino II

I reported on board in 1989 as the Auxialiary Division Chief (A- Gang). Made the last WestPac and Spec Op on her and went through the Decom process with her. Though going on 24 years commissioned, she was not ready to go. Unfortunately the Reunion this year conflicts the expected delivery time frame of my first child (a boy - and new generation of Submariner! :)). Though submarines were my life for 20 years, this time my family comes first. I would be happy to hear from other shipmates from SS393 or SSN651. Smooth Sailing To All - Past, Present, and Future. I have read several books about how the war was handled in the pacific and most notably the memoirs of Pete Galantin, TAKE HER DEEP! The teamwork that is necessary for a submarine crew to function effectively is truly amazing; I believe that submariners could teach all of us lessons in cooperation and more.

I went to sub school, learned the ropes and ending being a pretty good electronics "fix-it" guy. I specialized in the electronic surveillence arena. At the time, it was NOT FUN. Today I look back at that period of my life and it inspires me to bump-on. But it is pretty neat to look back on that point in the timelime of your life and answer the age-old question of: "Where Were You...WHEN ???" "I was HERE... doing THIS....!" Comments: Good Morning Uffie, I tried to enter the following in the guest book, but, it would not let me. Can you enter it for me? Great site Uffie. You have done a very wonderful job in bringing back so many memories of the Queenfish. The Guest Log and Ships Roster are magnificant. I see those names and I remember the part of the crew I served with ant the times we went through. We did have some exciting times and then I read about other times, after I left the boat (Bumpers, Oct 1976), and I can tell that it looks like the Queenfish continued to have very exciting times all throughout her 24 year career. We "spliced the main brace" twice while I was on board and I wonder how many other times that happened. I am also amazed to learn about what those I served with went on to become and I am saddened to also learn that some I served with are now on "patrol forever." I remember a young officer that inflated the aft raft while we were submerged and come to find out he later went on to become a skipper of boats himself. I wonder if he ever told his crews about "that raft." Then there were two Ltjg t! hat became RADM. I remember the white hat that couldn't get out of the Navy fast enough and then learn that he later came back in for ten more years. I wonder how many juke boxes crews of the Queenfish replaced in Yokosuka over the years. I will never forget Australia being held out before us and heading there, only to mysterious have to turn back before we crossed the equator. I see that finally the boat did make it there. I remember field daying the boat for several days, so that it would look spiffy when President Nixon would board us at Papa Hotel and ride us in. Not only did he not board us, he wasn't even on the pier when we tied up and in fact he wasn't even in Hawaii. Boat sure did look good! I wonder how long the "Bat Book" managed to stay on the boat and who finally ended up with it. There is one skill that I have never forgotten how to use and the is "one minute" showers. It is a skill I use to this day when ever there is a power outage in Seattle??? Bes! t of all when ever anyone calls me by my given name, my boat given name, I know exactly when I knew them. It was a great crew and I already have my room reserved back in Groton for July 1999. I miss you guys and I never forgot any of you. Sweetpea, May 1971-Sep 1973.

Comments: My interest in Queenfish SS-393 is my good friend Dan Kachur Subcommittee member and modler extream built a 1/48th scale r/c model of Queenfish and we run together frequently. I have a 1/48 scale Uss Wahoo . I read about Queenfish in Thunder Below by Fluckey and think loughlin did an excellent job. It is unfortuinate he got blamed for the hospital ship sunk. As if the japs really stuck to the rules. Anyway I am also a subcommittee member. Would like to hear from you. WWii Subs is my interest. I am currently building a 1/72ns Sturgeon to be named, and a 1/48th scale type ix u boat. We might organize another regatta in Vancouver British columbia next year. It will be announced in the subcommittee when confirmed. . Great page. Enjoyed the history and photos. One day i will get my computor on line. Right now I am using my wife's work machine. I checked aboard in 68 the day Queenfish returned from WestPac and left her in 71 the day she departed on WestPac. I made WO1 in 72, later went LDO, and still later augmented to Unrestricted Line. I'm the Commodore at Afloat Training Group Western Pacific and yes, I'm still a NUC-only a Surface one now. I remember you clearly as well as many of the other guys onboard at that time. Its really amazing how quickly these things come back. Its a great site, let me know what I can do to help. Warm regards, Mike Calhoun

Comments: Gentlemen, I have been unable to send you any email, not sure why I can't get it to work. Anyway, I wanted to let you know about some of the names on your roster, though I don't have much more information than you do. The officer you have listed as J Beers is actually Dave Beers, he was onboard from about 82-86 or so and ended up as Weps before he left. Last I heard he was XO of one of the San Diego boats, but I haven't talked to him since I got to California. TMC Bellinger was at the Naval Medical Center here in San Diego until he retired a couple of months ago. I think he stayed out here in Southern California. LT Brightwell's first name is Jeff and Ellegood's first name is John. Thomas Campbell was a JO onboard while I was there, probably from 86-88 or so. He is not the same guy as the engineer listed just prior to his name. Peter Flannery has had an excellent career almost completely done in Portsmouth as CO of the Lapon, deputy, and then Squadron CO. I know he is still in Portsmouth, though I don't know if he has retired yet. I don't think so. Anyway, good luck with the roster and the reunion. I don't know about getting back to the east coast next summer, but will keep it in mind. Thanks, J Erickson Queenfish 84-87 Weps

Comments: Great page! I'm looking for a way to find a list of active duty subs during the years 1966-1972. I suspect I'll have to query the Library directly. Is such info available over the 'web? Beowulf ps....I'm one of those Marines who decided to exit from a perfectly good sub along time ago. I enjoyed the ride...and the pick up.

I love the water, but must admit that 30,000+ feet and "Bookin'" is quite a bit of fun at that!! Best of luck to all of those of you that served so proudly!! NICE PAGE!!

Comments: To all the QF shipmates: Uffie has put together a great chat room for us. So far there has only been THREE crew members show up for muster. Uffie, Beads & me. Get off your rears and on-line. It's free and the last two weeks it has been a lot of fun. It is the first time I have ever been in a chat room. I was a little nervous about doing it but now I wouldn't miss it. I would really like to chat with some of my shipmates and to hear some of the sea stories from those who took care of the lady after I left. Be there next Sunday if you can. I know it is the 4th of July and many may be watching the fireworks. But if your not busy, butt in to the chat. DanH

Comments: Hello Q-fishers. Glad to see the page. I served on Queenfish 1978-1982, aboard in Pearl Harbor with Milo and leaving in shipyard at Bremerton 1982. I am having an exceptionally great life. Got a lot to say but will keep it short for now, hopefully others will pick it up. I was in on one of the 3 Meritorious Unit Citations. Good and cool crew there for that one. You know who you are. Kangas has the names. Eubanks, thanks for showing me the MG set indications. I came from prototype stupid but kind of smart. I playfully kicked a kid named Peterson with, I think Stenstrom there, in the buttocks kindly, to emphasize what amps to pick up on MG set when changing line-up. Eubanks explained early on how to do it and suddenly 48 months of training made sense. Good golly, my 8 year old daughter's name is Molly. John Messina, can I borrow some money to go to Maui? Jackie Chadwick, got any good, really good wine. Nagasawa, hey person of Japanese lineage! Where's Chief Austin? SPM! Fluff you still alive? Walt Miller, you too? Kona, tied up off shore for, can you believe, test discharge? Suk me. Got a lot to say, join in.

Comments: Phone: 610-375-6789 I Can't believe I stumbled upon this page. This is truly outstanding. What a sight for sore eyes. I found it at the request of my 10 year old daughter - who is studying about Hawaii in school - and wanted to know more about Pearl and the sub I was on. She is sitting with me as I write these comments. After all these years; I guess it is true that you can run but you cannot hide!!! I recognize many of the names in this book and enjoyed reading your comments. I actually have a partial mailing list Chief Dietz mailed to me and keep in touch with Warren (Weary) Watson. (an A ganger) I told him about the Web Site. I served on the Queenfish as a Sonar Tech. from July of '70 until August '75 with "Scotty", "Squatty Body", Chas. Clifton, Rick Peters,"R.D. Slick", "Mad Dog Madison" , Chiefs Peterson and Green and many others. My handle was "JB". A long time on Das Boat! Made the Pole trip of August '70 and a few West Pacs. I am a proud member of "The Pacific Mushroom Growers Association" - politically incorrect as it may now be..Still have the Pole patch, and many others, sewn on my leather flight jacket. Naval Aviators never had the thrill of "flying" under water doing "angles and dangles". I was on with the creator of this page; "Uffie" We need to have a reunion other than on the coast and mass mail everyone we can find to tell them about this page. The Peoria, Il idea sounds great. I did see some of the pictures from the West Coast reunion. What a trip seeing some of the faces from the past...especially "Cap't Mac". Keep up the great work "Uffie". Hope to hear from anyone who served during my incarceration!! Again, my Voice Mail is 610-375-6789 (that's a number even you "Nukes" can remember) and my E-Mail is subman651@aol.com. (I'm surprised nobody tagged that E-Mail addressbefore me.)
